TikTok Download Troubleshooting: Why Your Video Will Not Save and How to Fix It
Solutions for the most common problems when downloading TikTok videos, from expired links to region restrictions.
Before you troubleshoot
Most TikTok download failures fall into a handful of categories. Before going through the full list, try the basics:
- Refresh and try again. TikTok's CDN occasionally has temporary hiccups. Waiting 30 seconds and retrying solves about half of all download failures.
- Check your internet connection. A weak or unstable connection can cause downloads to stall or fail silently.
- Make sure the video still exists. Go back to TikTok and confirm the video is still there and publicly viewable.
If the basics do not fix it, read on.
Problem: "Video not found" or "Unable to resolve"
What causes it
This error appears when TikSave cannot locate the video on TikTok's servers. The most common reasons:
- The video is set to private. TikSave can only access publicly available content. If the creator changed the video's privacy setting to Private or Friends Only, it cannot be resolved.
- The video was deleted. If the creator removed the video or TikTok's moderation team took it down, the link is dead.
- The link is malformed. If you accidentally copied only part of the URL, or if the URL got modified during copying, TikSave cannot parse it.
- Region restrictions. Some TikTok content is only available in certain countries. If the video is region-locked and your location does not match, it may not resolve.
How to fix it
- Double-check that you can view the video yourself on TikTok right now
- Re-copy the link from TikTok (make sure you get the full URL)
- If region-restricted, you may need a VPN to access the content (note: this has its own legal considerations)
- If the video is private or deleted, there is no fix. The content is not accessible.
Problem: download starts but the file is 0 bytes or corrupt
What causes it
- Storage full on your device. Your browser will attempt the download but cannot write the file because there is no space left.
- Browser interrupted the download. If you switched apps, locked your phone, or lost internet connection during the download, the file may be incomplete.
- TikTok CDN link expired. CDN URLs have a limited lifespan. If you resolved a video but waited too long before tapping download, the URL may have expired.
How to fix it
- Check your device storage (Settings > Storage on both Android and iOS)
- Keep the browser tab active during the download, do not switch away
- Re-resolve the video on TikSave to get a fresh CDN URL, then download immediately
Problem: video downloads but has no audio
What causes it
This is uncommon but happens in specific scenarios:
- Copyright muting. TikTok may have silenced the audio track due to a copyright claim. The video plays normally in the app (using a different audio source) but the downloadable file has muted audio.
- Separate audio track. Some TikTok videos use a licensed music track that is served separately from the video stream within the app. The downloadable file may only contain the creator's original audio (voiceover, ambient sound) without the background music.
How to fix it
- Try downloading the Standard Quality version instead of High Quality. The app-level export sometimes preserves the combined audio better.
- If you need the specific music track, try TikSave's MP3 extraction option separately.
- Accept that some audio tracks are intentionally stripped from downloads due to licensing restrictions.
Problem: the High Quality option is not available
What causes it
The High Quality (watermark-free) download relies on TikTok's CDN serving the original source file. In some cases, this file is not available:
- Older videos. TikTok may have purged the original source file from their CDN, keeping only the watermarked version.
- Regional CDN differences. The original file may be available on some CDN nodes but not others.
- Creator-level restrictions. TikTok may restrict source file access for certain accounts or content types.
How to fix it
- Download the Standard Quality version as a fallback
- Try again later (CDN availability can change)
- If the video is yours, re-upload the original from your camera roll
Problem: download is extremely slow
What causes it
Downloads from TikSave stream directly from TikTok's CDN to your browser. Slow downloads usually indicate:
- Network congestion. Your ISP or local network is throttled or overloaded.
- CDN distance. TikTok's CDN may be routing your request to a geographically distant server.
- Viral video congestion. Extremely popular videos can experience temporary CDN saturation.
How to fix it
- Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data to see which is faster
- Try at a different time (CDN congestion is often time-of-day dependent)
- Smaller file option: download Standard Quality instead of High Quality if you need the file quickly
Problem: browser shows a warning or blocks the download
What causes it
- Overzealous browser security. Some browsers flag MP4 downloads from unfamiliar sites as potentially dangerous.
- Pop-up blocker interference. If your browser's pop-up blocker is extremely aggressive, it may block the download prompt.
- iOS download restrictions. Older versions of iOS (pre-iOS 13) have limited browser download support.
How to fix it
- On Chrome: if you see a "This file may be dangerous" warning, click the three-dot menu on the warning and select "Keep" or "Download anyway"
- Check your browser's pop-up blocker settings and whitelist tik-save.com
- On iPhone, make sure you are running iOS 13 or later and using Safari
Problem: the downloaded video looks blurry or low quality
What causes it
- You downloaded Standard Quality instead of High Quality. Standard Quality uses the app-level export, which is more compressed.
- The creator uploaded a low-resolution original. If the creator recorded at 720p, the download will be 720p regardless of which quality option you choose.
- Your video player is downscaling. Some media players on older devices downscale 1080p content for performance reasons.
How to fix it
- Re-download using the High Quality option specifically
- Check the video properties (right-click > Properties on desktop, or check the file info) to confirm the resolution
- Try playing the file in a different video player
When to give up
Some downloads are simply not possible:
- Private or deleted content cannot be accessed
- Region-locked content requires a VPN (which adds complexity)
- Audio-stripped content due to copyright will not have music regardless of the download method
- Extremely old content may no longer have source files available on TikTok's CDN
In these cases, the issue is on TikTok's end, not TikSave's. The tool can only work with what TikTok's servers make available.
Preventing future issues
- Download sooner rather than later. CDN links and source file availability can change over time.
- Bookmark TikSave. Having quick access reduces the time between copying a link and starting the download, which minimizes the chance of CDN link expiration.
- Keep your browser updated. Modern browsers handle MP4 downloads more reliably than older versions.
- Monitor your storage. Running out of space mid-download is the most common preventable issue.
